The movie was a big box office hit and was generally well-received by critics, making way for a film franchise with a total of five movies, the last one being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017.
The first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, saw Jack Sparrow joining forces with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) to save Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from cursed pirates led by Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) on board of the Black Pearl. This series of movies is based on Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the same name and introduced the audience to one of Johnny Depp’s most iconic roles: Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney takes inspiration from pretty much everywhere – from classic fairy tales to legends, real-life people and events, and even theme park attractions, as is the case of Pirates of the Caribbean.
